ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM SIMULATION COMPETITION
Transition to a Low-Carbon Network

The Electrical Power System Simulation Competition (EPSSCOM 2025), jointly organized by IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter and UTAR Sungai Long and CPSE, successfully concluded on 6 December 2025. Held between 21 July and 6 December 2025, the competition brought together undergraduate students majoring in electrical power engineering from Malaysia and Indonesia. Designed to foster logical, innovative, and critical thinking through problem-based learning (PBL), the event challenged students to tackle real-world power system problems using professional simulation software.


Competition Highlights

    • Teams of 3–5 students worked intensively to produce:
      • A technical report
      • A video presentation
      • A live Q&A session with judges
    • 11 teams successfully completed the competition out of the 14 originally registered.
    • Projects were evaluated by a distinguished panel of three judges from industry and academia.


Awards & Recognition

The competition culminated in an exciting final day at UTAR Sungai Long, where teams competed for prestigious prizes:

    • Gold Prize: RM 3,000
    • Silver Prize: RM 1,500
    • Bronze Prize: RM 1,000
    • Consolation Prizes: RM 500 each
    • Special Awards: RM 500 per award


Impact

EPSSCOM 2025 not only showcased the technical skills of future engineers but also strengthened collaboration between academia and industry. The event highlighted the importance of simulation-based problem solving in preparing students for the challenges of modern power systems. The IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter extends its heartfelt congratulations to all participants and looks forward to welcoming new talents at the 6th EPSSCOM in 2026!

Competition: 
Inspiring Young Minds: Renewable Energy Innovation Competition

The Renewable Energy Innovation Competition, held under the Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP), celebrated the creativity and achievements of young students from SJK Sang Ming with a grand award ceremony at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS). Out of 40 entries, the top 10 finalists showcased innovative applications in renewable energy and smart home concepts, receiving special prizes and recognition for their outstanding ideas.

UTAR’s Key Role

This impactful program was a joint collaboration between Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), and UTS with strong support from the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), CPSE, and the IEEE Student Branch at UTS. UTAR’s involvement was pivotal in shaping the competition’s educational framework, ensuring that students gained exposure to problem-based learning, engineering principles, and sustainability awareness.

By contributing expertise and academic support, UTAR reinforced its commitment to nurturing future leaders in green technology and STEM education, while strengthening university-community partnerships across Malaysia and Sarawak.


Program Highlights

    • Phase One (June 2025): Seminars, hands-on projects, and visits to UTS Smart Home facilities gave students foundational knowledge.
    • Phase Two (December 2025): The competition showcased student innovations, culminating in the award ceremony.
    • Leaders from academia, including UTS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khairuddin Abdul Hamid and Prof. Ir. Dr. Tiong Sieh Kiong from UNITEN, officiated the event.
    • The initiative also fostered parental involvement, strengthening family bonds through shared goals in sustainability.


Impact

The KTP program exemplifies how universities like UTAR can empower communities by instilling climate awareness, renewable energy knowledge, and STEM enthusiasm among the younger generation. It is a testament to UTAR’s dedication to advancing education while championing a greener, more sustainable future.

ICSGCE 2020 Virtual Conference

The International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy 2021 (ICSGCE 2021) was successfully organised on a virtual platform from 15th to 17th Oct 2021. This conference was initially planned to be held physically in Kuching, Sarawak, with the financial sponsorship of Sarawak Convention Bureau. However, the organizing committee has changed its plan to hold the conference on the virtual platform after considering the safety and the well-being of the participants due to the pandemic Covid 19. The key sponsors of the conference include Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), IEEE Power & Energy Society in Malaysia (PES) and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC).

The local organizing committee comprises Prof lr Dr Lim Yun Seng, and Dr lr Wong Jianhui, Dr Chua Kein Huat, Dr Thiam Hui San, and Dr Steven Lim, who are mainly the members of UTAR Research Centre for Power Systems and Electricity (CPSE). Prof lr Dr Ewe Hong Tat is the honorary chair of the conference. The International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy Technologies is an excellent platform for educators, researchers, scientists, and engineers from different countries of the world to share their latest knowledge and findings on the topics related to power and energy, including energy generation, delivery, conversion, management, storage, consumption, trading, policies, energy resources and engineering education. There were participants from USA, China, Switzerland, France, Germany, Norway, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia.
